Do Whippets need winter coats?

Whippets and Italian Greyhounds need warm, functional clothing as they suffer from the cold and often require a coat, jumper or onesie to keep them comfortable and happy in the colder months.

Does fleece keep dogs warm?

Lightweight Coat – when your pup is this young their shape is not fully developed so, you can get away with a reasonably priced coat from your local pet shop. If you want to invest in a proper whippet coat, please be aware that pup will very soon grow out of it!

Whippet’s require a warm coat to sleep in & sit around in at home. They must have their backs covered for warmth whilst sleeping. Whippets need special collars because they have long and narrow necks. Traditional thin dog collars can irritate their necks or cause physical damage because Whippets can suddenly decide to chase things.

In terms of Whippets, they are fair weather creatures. The have short coats and practically no body fat and this means they tend to seek out comfort and warmth. Hence Whippets probably like to sleep under covers because it keeps them cosy!

Why do Whippets shake?

Whippets shake for a variety of reasons. As with lots of dog breeds, Whippets shake through fear / anxiety, excitement and cold. However, shaking might also indicate a medical problem. If you have any concerns as to why your Whippet is shaking, visit a veterinary professional at the earliest convenience.

How often do Whippets need a bath?

One thorough brushing a week will suffice, although you may wish to do this more often as Whippets love to be brushed, especially with a grooming mitt. Bathe your Whippet only when they’re dirty; in most cases, you’ll get away with wiping them with a damp cloth.
